Steve Nickolaisen Ph.D. Licensed Psychologist

I really respect those who want to face the more difficult parts of life and themselves. I enjoy helping people find the insights and skills that will help them lead more fulfilling lives. I have been in the behavioral health field for a decade and have helped people with a wide array of struggles. My approach to counseling is anchored in evidence-based treatments that work well among a wide variety of issues. I utilize skills and interventions from Cognitive Behavior Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, and Dialectical Behavior Therapy.

As a teenager, I struggled with a variety of mental health issues, including ADHD, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, and depression. It was a difficult and dark time for me. Learning to cope with these things was a long journey for me. As I learned and healed, I realized I wanted to help others with mental health struggles. The foundation for my counseling approach comes from skills and interventions that I have implemented successfully in my own life.

My first jobs in the behavioral health field involved working as a staff member in a residential treatment center, and then on a psychiatric unit. After I experienced working directly with clients all throughout the day, I decided I wanted to pursue more education so I could be a greater source of healing in other’s lives. I completed my Master’s in Counseling and PhD in Counseling Psychology at Northern Arizona University in 2017. I then completed an internship and residency at a regional hospital, where I did counseling and testing in inpatient and outpatient settings. I moved to the Wasatch Front in 2019, and have been doing outpatient counseling and testing since.
